The Supreme Court cleared the way Tuesday for President Donald Trump’s plan to shrink the federal workforce, overriding lower court orders that had temporarily blocked the cuts. Critics warn the move could eliminate hundreds of thousands of jobs and disrupt critical government services.
A female pedestrian was killed early Tuesday after a driver struck her on the westbound Dulles Toll Road near the Herndon/Chantilly exit. The crash occurred around 2 a.m., according to Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority Police. The driver remained at the scene and was taken to a hospital with injuries that were not considered life-threatening.
Woodlawn Press Winery will permanently close its tasting room at 8733-B Cooper Road on Saturday, July 26, after six years in business. Owners Andrew Rosado and Bonnie Evangelista are moving to Pittsburgh to operate other family-owned businesses. Their wines will remain available at various festivals and markets.
Virginia first lady Suzanne Youngkin and other members of Gov. Glenn Youngkin’s family escaped unharmed after becoming stranded Friday at family property along the Guadalupe River in Texas. The area was hit by devastating flash floods that killed more than 100 people. The governor was in Virginia at the time.
Fairfax County police are stepping up efforts to curb impaired driving throughout July. The Safe July campaign targets dangerous driving during a season of increased celebrations and gatherings. It follows a summer crime initiative launched in June that added foot patrols around nightlife destinations.
Blazin Chicken & Gyro opened Saturday at 11011 Main Street in Fairfax City’s Westbriar Center. The halal restaurant serves hot chicken, burgers, sandwiches and gyros. The company now has nine franchise locations, including one at 7502 Leesburg Pike in Tysons Station.
Inova Health expects to begin replacing a sewer serving its Center for Personalized Health in Woodburn next month. Tamares Group and Atlantic Realty are seeking long-term extensions on more than $200 million in loans connected to Reston’s Plaza America I, II, III and IV office buildings. The companies say the extensions would provide flexibility as they continue investing in the properties, which have occupancy rates ranging from 54% to 64%.
