Turmoil across the federal workforce may be weighing on Virginia’s housing market. Statewide home sales fell 9% year over year in February, totaling 6,129.
Virginia Realtors chief economist Ryan Price said the slowdown could be an early sign that concerns about federal employment are making buyers in some regional markets hesitant.

A fentanyl-testing bill named for an Annandale teenager is set to become law. Absolon and Thurraya Kent began advocating for the measure after their 17-year-old son, Malcolm, died from an overdose two years ago. They later learned that testing for fentanyl poisoning at the hospital might have saved him.
Youngkin signed Del. Irene Shin’s bill on March 21. It will require emergency rooms to include fentanyl testing in urine screenings.
Falls Church officials are considering minimum tree-planting requirements for future commercial developments, though the proposed change may affect only a small number of projects.
The Town of Herndon has selected Brent M. Heavner as its new chief communications officer. Heavner, most recently a communications lead for the U.S. Education Department, will start April 14. He succeeds Anne Papa, who is retiring after more than 19 years with the town.
George Mason University’s historic basketball seasons have ended. The women’s team made its first March Madness appearance but lost 94-59 to Florida State on Saturday, March 22. Fairfax County Fire and Rescue personnel joined county partners over the weekend to install 160 smoke alarms at Penn Daw Terrace. The effort provided additional protection and fire-safety information to 193 residents.
