A five-year capital improvement program adopted Feb. 6 calls for two new elementary schools, renovations at 22 existing campuses and the relocation of modular buildings.
The fiscal 2026-2030 plan includes renovations at 18 elementary schools, two middle schools and two high schools. The work is intended to improve safety, modernize learning spaces, increase energy efficiency and address enrollment growth in rapidly developing areas.
Safety, academics and workforce
Superintendent Michelle Reid presented the annual monitoring report for Executive Limitation 13, which establishes operational requirements for safety and security. Members found Reid in compliance, approved the 2024-25 school-year monitoring report and retained the policy in its current form.
Reid also presented an academic update on the National Assessment of Educational Progress.
A separate update addressed Pillar C of the 2023-30 Strategic Plan, which focuses on a diverse, adaptive and supported workforce. Reid delivered the presentation with Michelle Lis, senior manager for teacher leadership and instructional coaching, and Jay Nocco, executive director of professional learning. The novice teacher instructional coaching program was among the subjects covered.
Eleven people spoke during the public participation period, and student representative Megan Sawant delivered a report. Sizemore Heizer provided an update from the Budget Committee before Reid presented superintendent matters.
Members also approved proclamations recognizing Black History Month, Career and Technical Education, Disability Employment, Adult and Community Education Appreciation Month, and Sleepy Hollow Elementary School’s 70th anniversary.
The consent agenda covered minutes from the Dec. 19, 2025, meeting, additional advisory committee appointments and several contracts.
Fall teams and ensembles recognized
A ceremony beginning at 6:14 p.m. honored athletic and academic teams for their fall 2024 accomplishments:
- Langley High School golf
- Langley High School girls volleyball, a repeat champion
- Robinson Secondary School girls cross country
- Robinson Secondary School cheerleading
- Chantilly High School’s League of Legends esports team
- Woodson High School’s Rocket League esports team
- Frost Middle School boys cross country
- Frost Middle School girls cross country
The performing arts ensembles recognized were:
- Falls Church High School Chamber Orchestra
- Lake Braddock High School Symphony Orchestra
- Thoreau Middle School Symphonic Band
- West Springfield High School Wind Symphony
- Glasgow Middle School Wind Ensemble
- Woodson High School Wind Ensemble
- James W. Robinson Secondary School Symphonic Band
The regular session opened at 7:01 p.m. with the Pledge of Allegiance and a moment of silence. Wakefield Forest Elementary School’s Advanced Sixth Grade Strings, directed by Mary Lubinski, performed the national anthem. Woodson High School student Sarea Mason performed “Lift Every Voice and Sing,” accompanied by Principal Kevin Greata.
