The Federal Aviation Administration plans to reduce arrivals at Reagan National Airport amid safety concerns following the collision between a helicopter and an American Airlines regional jet that killed 67 people.
In Groveton, officers responded Thursday night to a two-vehicle crash at Route 1 and Dawn Drive. One driver, an adult man, was hospitalized with life-threatening injuries. The wreck closed northbound Route 1 between Beddoo Street and Fairview Drive.
A federal judge temporarily blocked the Trump administration’s deferred-resignation program just hours before the midnight application deadline. The administration had promoted the program as a buyout forming part of a broader effort to eliminate federal jobs.
Fairfax County fire crews battled a three-alarm commercial fire in Lorton early Thursday. The blaze was reported shortly after 5 a.m. in the 8100 block of Terminal Road, near Sharpshooters Indoor Range and Pro Shop.
In Springfield, plans to replace a Shell gas station and auto repair shop at Backlick and Industrial roads with a new gas station and convenience store received support from the Fairfax County Planning Commission on Feb. 5.

The Popeyes at Mount Vernon Crossroads shopping plaza officially reopened Feb. 5 after being closed since a Nov. 23 kitchen fire. The restaurant is located at 7832 Richmond Highway. The Cut Butchery and F45 Training are also expected to open along the corridor in the coming weeks.
A Virginia bill targeting high school athletic recruiting tactics failed to advance by the General Assembly session’s midpoint Tuesday. House Bill 1656 would bar officials from using the “homeless” designation to attract student athletes. Del. Dan Helmer, a Fairfax Democrat who sponsored the measure, said the effort is not over.
