Flash flooding and runoff sent creeks spilling across Fairfax County roads, including U.S. Route 50 between Prosperity Avenue and Cedar Lane. Videos posted online showed vehicles stuck in high water in McLean and at the flood-prone intersection of Besley and Old Courthouse roads in Wolf Trap.
More rain could arrive Tuesday, July 15. The forecast calls for mostly cloudy skies, a high near 87 degrees and a 70% chance of precipitation. Temperatures are expected to fall to around 74 degrees Tuesday night, when the chance of rain will be 60%.
In Herndon, a dispute over a downtown redevelopment property has moved to court. The town alleges in a complaint filed Friday, July 11, in Fairfax County Circuit Court that Comstock Companies is refusing to return the property it had been expected to redevelop in an attempt to make the town cover certain costs. The developer has not responded to requests for comment.
Virginia officials are also launching an artificial intelligence pilot program designed to review state regulations and guidance documents. The technology will identify conflicting language, recommend clearer wording and assist agencies that have not met Gov. Glenn Youngkin’s 25% regulatory-reduction benchmark.
Concerns about Northern Virginia’s economy are extending beyond the region. A recent Fairfax County office-complex sale has renewed warnings that an economic slowdown in Northern Virginia could reduce revenue flowing to Richmond and rural localities, potentially leaving those communities to raise local taxes if they want to improve schools.
Drivers should prepare for nighttime ramp closures at the Interstate 66 and Fairfax County Parkway interchange. Weather permitting, paving work will close ramps from Tuesday night, July 15, through Thursday night, July 17, and again from Sunday night, July 20, through Wednesday night, July 23. Motorists should use posted detours.
Elsewhere, Fairfax couple Katie Lettie and Vincent Bauer married inside an Arlington library after winning a contest for a free, all-inclusive wedding. Hundreds of community members attended the ceremony among the bookshelves.
Falls Church officials are reconsidering improvements along Lincoln Avenue after estimated costs climbed 82%. Transportation and stormwater work on the key city road will likely be completed in phases.
A Northern Virginia teenager is meanwhile training for “American Ninja Warrior” at Vertex Labs Academy, a ninja gym in a warehouse at a Lorton industrial park. The practice course features scaled-down versions of the television show’s jumping, hanging, swinging and leaping obstacles.
