Every Monday, Damien Ettere challenges Forest Edge Elementary students to find the math hiding in the world around them.
Known to students as “Mr. E,” the Title I resource teacher presents a weekly “Where’s the Math Challenge?” during the school’s morning news show. He uses the segment to help students visualize fractions, decimals and percentages while showing that mathematical knowledge can be found everywhere.
Ettere also guides students through creating and discussing word problems. The weekly exercise is designed to make math approachable for learners of all abilities.
What excites him most, Ettere said, is “the passionate mathematicians I’m growing.”
His work was featured in “In the Spotlight,” a video series highlighting effective practices and inspiring moments throughout Fairfax County Public Schools. New episodes are released Tuesdays on the division’s YouTube channel.
