The former Clifton Elementary School building was declared uninhabitable on June 26, 2025, clearing the way for demolition and site cleanup at 7010 Clifton Road.
Members approved revisions to Policy 8258, which governs building evaluations, renovations and infrastructure maintenance. A related motion directed Superintendent Dr. Reid to move forward with demolition under the policy.
Before any money is committed, Dr. Reid must return with a proposed funding plan and general site layout for approval. If the required timeline cannot be met, she must request an extension.
The regular meeting opened at 7 p.m. with the Pledge of Allegiance, a moment of silence and a performance of the national anthem by South Lakes High School student Jocelyn Looney.
Proclamations honored the Quander family, FCPS participants in the Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair, International Women in Engineering Day and FCPS National Merit Scholarship winners.
Five spring 2025 Virginia High School League championship teams also received recognition:
- Herndon High School boys soccer
- Langley High School boys tennis
- Robinson Secondary School film
- Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology girls tennis
- West Potomac High School boys lacrosse
Seven people spoke during community participation. Megan Sawant presented Student Representative Matters for the final time.
Additional actions included revisions to the Strategic Governance Manual’s rules for proclamations and approval of a new intergovernmental contract with George Mason University for the Early Identification Program. Minutes from the May 20, 2025, Budget Committee meeting were also approved.
Dr. Reid delivered an Academic Matters presentation focused on Portrait of a Graduate.
Under the consent agenda, members adopted minutes from the June 12 meeting, awarded several contracts and approved appointments and reappointments for the Educational Employees’ Retirement System and Educational Employees’ Supplementary Retirement System.
The consent agenda also covered the Monthly Employee Separation Report, the Biennial Division Literacy Plan and Policy 2745 on commencement activities.
Mr. McElveen reported on the Audit Committee, Ms. Lady discussed the Governance Committee and Ms. St. John-Cunning presented a Public Engagement Committee report. Dr. Reid later delivered Superintendent Matters.
St. John-Cunning, Lady, Moon, Sizemore Heizer, Dr. Anderson, McElveen, Dixit, Meren and Frisch offered remarks during Board Matters.
The meeting adjourned at 10:25 p.m. A Comprehensive Planning and Development Committee meeting was scheduled for July 3 at 7 p.m., followed by regular meetings on July 10 and July 17 at 7 p.m.
