Hundreds of North Springfield Elementary School students discovered that space was closer than they imagined when Dr. George C. Nield revealed he had once attended their school—and later traveled beyond Earth aboard a Blue Origin mission.
Nield asked the students gathered in the gymnasium whether they might want to visit space someday. About two-thirds of them raised their hands. He then told the roughly 370 students that he had attended North Springfield in second and third grade, drawing gasps from the crowd.
The Annandale High School graduate reached space aboard Blue Origin’s New Shepard rocket in 2022. During his return to North Springfield, he used photographs to walk students through his training at the company’s Texas facility, his arrival at the launch pad and the flight itself.
Students joined Nield in reenacting the countdown, chanting, “5… 4… 3… 2… 1… blast off!” Their biggest reaction came when he displayed pictures of himself floating and performing flips in zero gravity inside the capsule, an experience he called “magical.”
Fourth grader Zoe imagined weightlessness as feeling like “a paper floating in the air.”
Nield also showed students that his connection to Fairfax County accompanied him into space. One of the small objects he carried aboard the mission was a whistle he had used while participating in the Annandale High School marching band.
The visit was organized through a new partnership involving Fairfax County Public Schools and the Colorado Springs-based Space Foundation, with Chantilly-based Arcfield serving as the charitable sponsor. Nield visited several elementary schools receiving federal Title I funding through the initiative.
Space Foundation instructors also led fourth- and fifth-grade students through a hands-on lesson about the James Webb Space Telescope.
Nield, now president of a space consulting company and chairman of the Global Spaceport Alliance, told students that spaceflight is no longer limited to people selected as NASA astronauts. Fifth grader Adam said he had previously thought NASA and SpaceX were the only organizations involved in space travel.
The growing industry also needs far more than astronauts and aerospace engineers, Nield explained. Welders, technicians, software programmers, cooks, journalists and lawyers can all contribute to space missions.
North Springfield STEAM teacher Nathania Cantanucci said that message complemented the school’s focus on STEM careers and the engineering design process. Students across grade levels practice collaboration, problem-solving and teamwork—skills that can support many future careers.
Fifth grader Nicole envisioned rockets eventually traveling autonomously or carrying larger groups of people into space.
Nield closed with a challenge rooted in his own journey from North Springfield student to space traveler: “Figure out what you really enjoy, pick a goal for yourself, and keep working on that goal.”
