A Fort Belvoir woman pleaded guilty Jan. 27 to assault and child-cruelty charges stemming from a violent attack on her 10-year-old son after she became angry about his messy bedroom.

China Ashley Charles, 38, admitted to assault with a dangerous weapon; assault by striking, beating and wounding; and cruelty to children.

Court documents state that on Oct. 8, 2024, Charles struck the child with a chair, dresser drawers, a hot iron, a charging wire, a hairbrush and a large serving spoon. When she tried to hit his face with the iron, he raised his hands to block it. The charging wire cut one of his fingers and caused it to bleed.

Charles then made the boy sit in a cold bath and splashed cold water on his face in an attempt to conceal what had happened.

The child escaped through his second-floor bedroom, dropping onto the roof before jumping to the ground and running away. Police later found him with substantial bruising and abrasions, a knot on the back of his head and a bleeding cut on his finger. An ambulance took him to the emergency room at Fort Belvoir Community Hospital.

Investigators recovered the iron, chair, hairbrush, serving spoon and several dresser drawers from Charles’ home. They also found a sweater and shirt bearing the handwritten words “I’M ON PUNISHMENT.” Several objects appeared to have blood on them, and testing confirmed that the child’s blood was on the iron and at least one drawer.

The child’s sister told investigators that Charles had been beating him for four years.

U.S. District Judge Leonie M. Brinkema accepted Charles’ plea. Sentencing is scheduled for May 9, when Charles will face a maximum possible prison term of 16 years. The judge will determine the sentence after reviewing federal guidelines and other statutory factors.
