Fairfax County is moving the Franconia District supervisor’s office and Kingstowne Library into the new Franconia Governmental Center at 7130 Silver Lake Blvd. in Alexandria, temporarily disrupting walk-in and meeting-room services.
The approximately 90,000-square-foot complex will feature structured parking and bring several public services under one roof. It will house the supervisor’s office, the expanded 30,000-square-foot Kingstowne Regional Library, the Franconia Police Station, the Franconia Museum, an active adult center and a child care center serving infants through prekindergarten.
Walk-in assistance at the supervisor’s office and access to its community room will be unavailable from Tuesday, Feb. 17, through Sunday, March 15. Supervisor Rodney Lusk and his staff will continue assisting residents remotely by phone at 703-971-6262, by email at franconia@fairfaxcounty.gov and through virtual conferences.

The Kingstowne Community Library closed Feb. 15. Its replacement, the new Kingstowne Regional Library inside the governmental center, is expected to open in early spring. Grand-opening information will be posted through the library’s newsroom and social media channels.
Affordable housing proposed for former center site
The former Franconia Governmental Center property could become a 120-unit affordable housing complex after the Fairfax County Planning Commission unanimously supported the proposal Feb. 4.
Good Shepherd Housing announced the commission’s decision Feb. 10. Franconia Development Partners, a consortium of housing organizations, is seeking to redevelop 3.3 acres of leased county land at 6121 Franconia Road with a four-story apartment building.
The plan next moves to the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors, which was scheduled to hold a public hearing on the rezoning request and conceptual development plan at 3:30 p.m. Feb. 17.
The development would serve individuals and families earning up to 60% of the area median income. Plans call for 49 one-bedroom, 45 two-bedroom and 26 three-bedroom apartments, with estimated monthly rents ranging from $1,679 to $2,341.
The property would also include 156 parking spaces. About 40% of the site would remain open space, including parkland accessible to the public.
