More than 100 children and adults received free eye exams and glaucoma screenings Feb. 1 at the Charles Houston Recreation Center.
The Community Eye Clinic also offered free glasses to patients who needed them. Each adult could choose one pair, while each child could receive two pairs.
“We’re the first stop along the way in eye care,” said James Paige, executive director of the Concerned Citizens Network of Alexandria and a co-sponsor of the clinic.
The event was organized by the network, the Alexandria Host Lions Club and the Prevention of Blindness Society.
David Rosenblum, president of the Alexandria Host Lions Club, said access to testing and glasses can dramatically improve people’s lives, particularly by helping children see the board at school and learn more effectively.
The clinic also gave volunteers experience serving the community. Natalie Lim, a regional medical assistant pursuing a medical career, said volunteering helped her learn.
“Today is not just about the eyes, it’s about the hearts and the connections to the community,” Paige said.
