Four free outdoor pickleball courts are set to open Wednesday at Capital One Center, bringing the distinctive pop of paddles and balls to the plaza outside the McLean Metro station’s north entrance.
The courts replace the seasonal ice skating rink in Metro Park at 1820 Capital One Drive South. Covering more than 8,000 square feet, the facility includes bleachers with room for up to 150 spectators.
Designed for singles and doubles matches, the courts feature professional-grade nets, USA Pickleball-compliant striping and a premium Laykold acrylic surface.
They will operate daily from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. through early November, when the ice rink is expected to return.
Walk-up play will be available, but players are encouraged to reserve a time through Court Reserve. Private events and tournaments can be arranged by emailing reservations@capitalonecenter.com.
Players should bring their own paddles and balls because only a limited supply of equipment will be available at the courts.
The opening arrives amid a slate of spring activities at Capital One Center, including the annual Easter egg hunt on Saturday, April 4.
Capital One has been adding more public amenities as it transforms its corporate campus into a mixed-use destination. After opening the elevated Perch skypark in 2021, the company has recently focused more attention on street-level attractions, Vice President of Global Workplaces Services Erin Mical said during the Tysons Community Alliance’s Vision Tysons summit on March 12.
Metro Park also includes outdoor seating, boardwalks, paved paths and a play area. Across Scotts Crossing Road, a 30,000-square-foot playground opened in Capital One East Park last September, while restaurants have continued filling the development’s ground-floor retail spaces.
The plaza sits above a five-level underground parking garage. Parking is free for the first two hours, then costs $6 for the third hour, $8 for three to four hours, $16 for four to six hours and up to $25 for a 24-hour stay.
Capital One’s plans call for 5 million square feet of development across its existing 26-acre campus. Although that buildout remains unfinished, the company is already preparing for further expansion after purchasing more than 14 acres last month in the nearby Scotts Run neighborhood south of Route 123.
