Washington-area residents celebrating Super Bowl LIX with alcohol could receive a free Lyft ride home through a new regional SoberRide program.
The service operated from 8 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 9, 2025, until 4 a.m. Monday, Feb. 10. Adults 21 and older could apply a promotional code in the Lyft app for up to $15 toward a safe ride home.
The Washington Regional Alcohol Program posted the code on SoberRide.com at 6 p.m. Feb. 9. Riders could enter it through the app’s “Payment” tab by selecting “Add Lyft Pass.”
WRAP President Kurt Erickson said nearly 40% of U.S. traffic deaths during the 2022 Super Bowl period involved drunk drivers, citing the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
The Super Bowl campaign marked WRAP’s first new SoberRide offering in a decade. The nonprofit also provides rides for St. Patrick’s Day, Cinco de Mayo, Halloween and the winter holiday period through New Year’s.
Private sponsors included Lyft, 395 Express Lanes, Giant Food, Enterprise Rent-A-Car, Glory Days Grill and numerous alcohol, restaurant and automotive industry organizations. Public partners included highway safety agencies in the District of Columbia, Maryland and Virginia.
Since 1991, SoberRide has provided 93,706 free rides home to people who otherwise might have driven after drinking in the Greater Washington area.
