The fiscal year 2027 budget won approval May 21, followed by a directive for Superintendent Dr. Michelle C. Reid to outline sound financial management principles, policies and practices.

The resulting document is scheduled for discussion and consideration at a Budget Committee Meeting of the Whole by September 2026.

The regular meeting began at 7:12 p.m. with the Pledge of Allegiance, a moment of silence and a national anthem performance by the Spring Hill Elementary School Strong Orchestra under the direction of Margot Mevinsky.

Chair Anderson welcomed Virginia Delegate Karen Keys-Gamarra, a former local school board member, and Fairfax County Clerk of the Court Christopher J. Falcon.

Members approved proclamations for Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, Children’s Mental Health and Wellness Month, and Speech-Language-Hearing Month. They also adopted resolutions dedicating the Hank Novak Press Box at Justice High School and honoring National Law Day.

Sixteen members of the public spoke during the community participation period. Student representative Faith Mekonen presented student matters, while Reid delivered a secondary literacy update and later presented superintendent matters.

The consent agenda included approval of the April 2026 Monthly Employee Separation Report, a nomination for the Virginia School Board Association’s 2026 Excellence in Workforce Readiness Award and several contracts.

A series of proposals was introduced for future action, with no votes taken at the meeting. Among them were land rights for bus stop improvements along South Lakes Drive at South Lakes High School in Reston, a contract value adjustment for industrial hygiene and mechanical and HVAC consulting services at Hayfield Secondary School, and authorization to proceed with two alternatives under a facilities condition assessment contract.

Additional future business included policies covering school facility leases, site planning and development, wireless telecommunications facilities, the standard school-year calendar and community use of school facilities. Members also introduced instructional technology motions, a proposal to name the South County Middle School library for founding principal Marsha Manning, a Centreville High School lease and renovation assessment, and revisions to the Strategic Governance Manual.

Committee reports came from Mr. McElveen on the Audit Committee, Mr. McDaniel on the Comprehensive Planning and Development Committee, Ms. Meren on the Governance Committee and Mr. Frisch on the Administration Committee.

Following closing remarks from members, the meeting adjourned at 11:17 p.m.
