Gas prices have climbed above $4 a gallon nationwide for the first time in four years as the war in Iran strains oil supplies and drives fuel costs higher around the world.
AAA reported that the national average had crossed the $4 threshold. Drivers in the District experienced an especially sharp increase, with prices rising 10.8 cents per gallon over the past week, compared with a national increase of 2.4 cents, according to GasBuddy.
A GasBuddy survey found that regular gas averaged $4.17 a gallon in D.C. on Monday.
Prices have not been this high since nearly four years ago, when Russia invaded Ukraine. At that time, the District’s average reached $4.35 per gallon.
Analysts said the national average could soon approach the record of $5 a gallon set in 2022 if the Strait of Hormuz remains blocked.
