Utility crews have begun restoring gas service to dozens of Centreville homes nearly a week after a Feb. 15 house explosion on Quail Pond Court injured two people and displaced residents.
As of noon Sunday, 42 of the 44 affected homes had been cleared for service restoration, according to Fairfax County Fire and Rescue. Gas was shut off to most nearby properties following the blast.
Every home approved for reentry underwent multiple safety inspections and was deemed safe by the agencies involved, Washington Gas said. Crews were continuing to narrow down the area requiring additional work while checking the system’s integrity.
The utility previously said it would provide HVAC assistance if needed and pay the cost of restoring appliances.
After gas service returns, each home will receive comprehensive atmospheric monitoring to check for hazardous gas readings and confirm that the building is safe to occupy.
