The Mount Vernon Gazette and Alexandria Gazette Packet will reduce their print schedules in 2025 as falling advertising revenue threatens their ability to continue publishing.
The newspapers plan to release print editions twice a month, generally during the first and third weeks. Between issues, readers can expect news alerts, top stories, community events, nonprofit updates, animal rescues, and traffic and roadwork information through email, the publications’ website, and social media.
The schedule change is intended to lower costs while creating more opportunities for digital delivery. Longer-term possibilities include pursuing nonprofit status, strengthening online coverage, and reducing additional printing expenses.
For now, the publications are seeking advertising, sponsorships, and financial contributions to bridge their revenue gap. They warned that without more support, they may be unable to continue covering and showcasing their communities.
Checks payable to the Alexandria Gazette Packet, Mount Vernon Gazette, or Local Media Connection may be mailed to 1606 King Street, Alexandria, Virginia 22314. The publications do not yet have nonprofit status. Donations are also accepted through their GoFundMe campaign, while advertising inquiries may be directed to Debbie Funk.
