Fairfax County Public Library will close George Mason Regional Library in late fall 2026 for an approximately two-year renovation of the 28,000-square-foot facility at 7001 Little River Turnpike in Annandale.

The project addresses aging building systems and infrastructure that county officials say are nearing the end of their life cycle. The existing layout also does not meet current and future operational needs, according to the library system.

Before the closure, the library will transfer its collection to another location or storage. Patrons may find items relocated or temporarily unavailable during this process.

The renovation, approved through a 2020 Fairfax County library bond referendum that included four facilities, will modernize library areas and add a maker space, several gathering spaces, and a flexible meeting room available for use during and after library hours.

County planners are targeting at least LEED Gold certification for the project, along with a 50% energy reduction relative to current ASHRAE standards and net-zero-energy design. The plans call for all-electric systems and equipment, rooftop photovoltaic panels, efficient heating and cooling, and electric-vehicle charging stations.

The rebuilt parking lot will provide 191 spaces for library users and staff.

The library building was originally constructed in 1960, with additions completed in 1970 and 1998. The county said it will update the project page as additional information and timelines become available. The announcement does not include a project cost, construction-contract details, interim library-service arrangements, or a precise reopening date.
