Mount Vernon’s annual town meeting brought local and federal officials together Saturday, Feb. 7, before George Washington himself took the stage to discuss the nation’s 250th anniversary.
Supervisor Dan Storck opened the 39th Annual Mount Vernon District Town Meeting, continuing a tradition launched in 1988 by the late Supervisor Gerry Hyland.
“He began this great tradition,” Storck said.
Residents began the morning in an exhibit hall filled with county agencies and local service providers. They later moved into the auditorium, where Storck reviewed developments across the district.
Speakers included Board of Supervisors Chairman Jeff McKay, U.S. Rep. Don Beyer, County Executive Bryan Hill and School Board member Mateo Dunne.
Washington recounted the crossing of the Delaware River on Christmas night. Beyer spoke about current challenges and said his office handled more than 3,400 resident cases last year.
During a question-and-answer session, McKay was asked about protecting residents from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
“We will do everything we can to prevent ICE from terrorizing our residents,” McKay said.
The meeting concluded with Storck’s latest video overview of Mount Vernon District. It highlighted local bicycle facilities, the new recreation center and the Summer Palooza event held last summer.
