Superheroes, ducks, unicorns and even a T-Rex stood above the crowds at No Kings rallies across Northern Virginia, using humor and oversized costumes to draw attention to opposition to the federal administration.
The approach, sometimes called “tactical frivolity,” became a recurring feature of No Kings protests after demonstrators dressed as the Portland Frog Brigade outside an Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility in Oregon.
Experts say playful costumes can amplify a protest’s message while signaling that demonstrators do not intend violence. Humor may also ease tension when participants face armed, masked enforcement agents or gather over serious political concerns.
Northern Virginia’s events featured a flamingo and several knitted frog hats alongside the superheroes and other creatures. In Kingstowne, costumed unicorns won applause from the crowd.
