Graham Road Elementary School staff took their back-to-school preparations into nearby neighborhoods, visiting students and families at their doorsteps before the new school year began.

During one of the hottest days of the week, teachers and administrators left the air conditioning behind for the school’s traditional welcome walk. Staff members distributed packets containing class assignments, bus schedules and other family resources, along with invitations to an open house later that evening.

Principal Lauren Badini said the annual walk gives staff members an opportunity to personally welcome families before the first day of classes. She said the visits build excitement, strengthen relationships and help every child feel recognized from the start.

Assistant Principal Nicole Scesney described the tradition as a sign that every student and family belongs. Meeting children in their own neighborhoods, she said, helps establish trust ahead of a year of learning.

Teacher Taylor Swen, participating in her third welcome walk, said she enjoys meeting her incoming students and connecting with families throughout the community.

Despite the summer heat, the outing brought plenty of smiles, waves and conversations. Staff members also encountered an unexpected neighborhood greeter: a friendly pet parakeet.

The walk combined practical preparations with personal introductions, giving families essential school information while helping students become acquainted with their teachers before entering the classroom.
