Gunston Elementary School librarian Nicole Oberdick has transformed the school’s library into an immersive space designed to spark curiosity, imagination, and a love of learning.
Oberdick, an Outstanding Elementary School Teacher finalist last year, creates monthly themes and carefully planned learning stations. Her lessons encourage students to ask questions, think independently, and use technology safely while reinforcing classroom instruction.
She also maintains an inclusive collection representing diverse voices and perspectives so students can find books that reflect a range of experiences.
Beyond daily lessons, Oberdick supports family and community involvement, helps organize school events, and pursues grants and partnerships to fund library programs.
Principal Kristen Rucinski said Oberdick developed a weekly schedule that gives every class access to lessons aligned with county standards and grade-level material. Rucinski credited her vision, dedication, and enthusiasm with strengthening learning throughout the school.
Her work is being highlighted ahead of School Library Month in April and National Library Week, which will be observed April 19-25.
