A 108-year-old carousel at Frying Pan Farm Park in Herndon has been severely damaged by January’s winter storm, leaving the longtime attraction silent. The Fairfax County Park Authority is beginning efforts to bring a replacement carousel to the park, potentially by spring 2027.
Fairfax County school officials are also considering calendar changes in response to parents’ logistical concerns. School board members including Dunne, Melanie Meren, Ricardy Anderson and Ryan McElveen have proposed opening schools on Veterans Day and Indigenous Peoples Day. Another proposal would cap early-release days at four per year across elementary, middle and high schools.
The Pennino Building will remain closed for at least the next several months after flooding damaged the county human services hub in February. County officials say repairs have made significant progress, but the building is not expected to reopen before summer.
In Washington, U.S. District Court Judge Richard Leon ordered construction of President Trump’s White House ballroom to stop until Congress authorizes its completion. Leon granted a preliminary injunction after finding that the National Trust for Historic Preservation in the United States is likely to prevail in its lawsuit.
Planned Parenthood clinics are urging Virginia lawmakers to preserve state support for the Virginia Contraceptive Access Initiative. Although the program is currently state-funded, a budget introduced by former Gov. Glenn Youngkin would shift it to federal funding amid uncertainty over future federal health care support.
Springfield Plaza is preparing to add a large electric-vehicle charging station. Electrify America has leased part of the shopping center’s parking lot for a facility expected to include about 20 chargers. Commuters previously used the site for slugging until Fairfax County opened a new parking garage in 2024. Attempts to attract a new retail building to the space were unsuccessful.
My Home Thai Bistro plans to celebrate the grand opening of its Falls Church restaurant on Saturday after nearly a year of preparation. The restaurant, located at 1009 W. Broad Street, will offer a modern approach to Thai food in what co-owner Anuchit “Andrew” Suthus-na-Ayuttaya described as a refined but welcoming setting.
The 2026 Fairfax County Walk & Win Challenge begins April 1. Residents, workers and visitors can complete a walk and submit a photo or screenshot with their name, email address and selected route for entry into weekly prize drawings.
