An unusually intense heat wave could threaten all-time temperature records across the Washington region and Mid-Atlantic later this week, with extreme conditions expected to stretch into the Fourth of July weekend.

Tuesday will offer a preview, bringing sunshine and a high near 90 degrees. The overnight low will be around 71 under mostly clear skies. South winds of 7 to 9 mph could gust as high as 18 mph.

In other developments:

  • Virginia lawmakers approved Gov. Abigail Spanberger’s amendments to the state’s two-year budget Monday, ending a months-long dispute less than 48 hours before the new fiscal year.

  • Rocket Lab announced plans to acquire Tysons-based satellite communications provider Iridium Communications in a cash-and-stock transaction valued at approximately $8 billion. The deal would rank among the commercial space industry’s largest consolidation moves.

  • Virginia’s health insurance enrollment has declined sharply since the 2026 open enrollment period ended Jan. 30. Enrollment fell from 371,000 people at the deadline to 298,000 by mid-June, according to data presented to the state’s Health Benefit Exchange Advisory Committee on June 18.

  • Madison Homes has revised its development proposal for Gallows Road and Libeau Lane in Annandale. The plan calls for 32 detached single-family homes across from Holmes Run Acres and Woodburn Elementary School, along with a Comprehensive Plan amendment allowing three to four homes per acre.

  • The Fairfax County Health Department will expand walk-in hours at all four public health centers beginning July 1. Appointments will remain available, while the added walk-in availability will cover services including vaccinations, sexually transmitted infection testing and maternity care.

  • Rock climbing, weight lifting and darts are joining the Northern Virginia Senior Olympics in 2026. The competition will run from Sept. 9 through Oct. 4, with more than 70 events planned at over 30 venues throughout Northern Virginia.

  • McLean placed ninth on a ranking of the nation’s wealthiest suburbs, down from sixth place a decade earlier. Vienna and Fort Hunt also appeared on the list.
