Disney’s Hoppers initially looks like a familiar story about a teenager fighting to protect a beloved patch of nature. Once the movie reveals its central twist, however, the slow beginning gives way to a funny and imaginative adventure with enough depth to engage children and adults.

Mabel is determined to save the glade behind her grandmother’s house, a place tied to her childhood memories. Mayor Jerry plans to clear the land to finish a highway, putting him at odds with the nature-loving teenager.

While tracking a beaver as part of her effort to protect the glade, Mabel discovers technology that can transfer her consciousness into an animal. She assumes the beaver’s identity and suddenly gains access to an entirely different world, including the ability to speak with its inhabitants. From there, she searches for the help she needs to restore the threatened habitat.

The animals, including the charming King George, make it easy to become invested in Mabel’s mission. Some characters begin as recognizable types, but the central cast receives enough individuality to keep the ensemble from feeling repetitive. The story also complicates the usual hero-versus-villain divide, leaving room for moral ambiguity.

The humor is another strength. Instead of relying too heavily on recycled jokes, Hoppers mixes physical comedy with lively dialogue. Although the film is clearly designed with younger viewers in mind, its funniest moments work across age groups without making adults feel out of place.

The animation is enchanting, though its level of detail can occasionally become distracting. Hyperrealistic fur, trees and textures sometimes clash with the otherwise simple shapes used for the characters and environments. In a few scenes, the visuals compete with the story rather than supporting it.

Despite that excess, Hoppers delivers a thoughtful examination of the relationship between people and nature. It respects its young audience enough to explore social values and complicated choices without reducing them to an overly simple lesson. The adorable animated animals provide an additional reason to enjoy a film that becomes far more engaging than its conventional opening suggests.
