More than 200 American flags were unfurled above the Potomac River on June 24, launching the eighth annual Flags for Heroes display at Cedar Knoll Restaurant.

The Rotary Club of Alexandria sponsors the project, which allows community members to dedicate flags to veterans, healthcare workers, first responders, friends, relatives and others who have made a difference in their lives. Each flag carries a card naming the honoree and sponsor.

Area volunteers joined Rotary members to install the display along the George Washington Memorial Parkway.

“It is very humbling to see these flags representing the heroes of our area,” Rotary president Jim Carmalt said. “This project is representative of the very model of Rotary — Service Above Self.”

The flags will remain on display through July 12, with donations accepted until then.

This year’s program has raised $40,000 so far. The money will support Alexandria Rotary Club community projects and provide direct financial assistance to more than 40 local charities and nonprofit organizations.
