A deadly bus crash on Interstate 95, a major traffic change in Fairfax County and increased fare enforcement on Metrobus are among the developments shaping Northern Virginia on Monday, June 1.
A bus driver has been charged with two counts of voluntary manslaughter after an early Friday crash on I-95 in Virginia killed five people and injured dozens. Investigators said the bus was traveling at high speed when it failed to slow for traffic near a work zone and struck six vehicles. Virginia State Police said Saturday, May 30, that additional charges were pending.
Drivers will see part of the new Fairfax County Parkway and Popes Head Road interchange open Tuesday, June 2, at approximately 10 a.m. The project includes three roundabouts. Southbound Fairfax County Parkway will reopen, along with access from eastbound and westbound Popes Head Road to the northbound parkway. Other portions are expected to remain closed until the fall.
Metro is also expanding fare enforcement on buses. Riders can expect more uniformed Metro Transit Police officers and other transit employees aboard and near Metrobuses as the agency steps up efforts to identify fare evasion.

In Richmond, some leading Democrats have voiced frustration over Gov. Abigail Spanberger’s vetoes of measures involving major party priorities, including collective bargaining and the creation of a retail cannabis market. Critics said the governor did not communicate her objections during the legislative session. Spanberger has said she supports the policy goals and hopes to sign revised legislation after its flaws are addressed.
Barcroft Plaza has been sold for $58 million. Federal Realty Investment Trust sold the shopping center to a joint venture involving Bain Capital Real Estate and 11North Partners. Federal Realty said the proceeds will support its existing properties and expansion into additional markets.
The Fairfax County Police Department has appointed Master Police Officer Emmilie Sanchez-Suarez as its Asian Community Liaison. The appointment was announced during Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month as part of the department’s community-engagement efforts.
Falls Church’s Urban Forestry Commission is considering affordable ways to expand the city’s tree canopy. During its May 20 meeting, commissioners expressed some doubt that the City Council would support new urban-forestry initiatives even if costs were limited.
