Fairfax County is seeking public feedback on a proposed $3.2 million walkway designed to improve pedestrian and bicycle access along Idylwood Road.

The project would create a continuous route on the road’s northwest side between Idylwood Court and Hillside Drive. Plans call for replacing existing sidewalk and asphalt trail segments with an approximately 900-foot-long, 8-foot-wide asphalt walkway.

The route would include about 100 feet of sidewalk east of Idylwood Court and 170 feet of trail west of Hillside Drive.

The Fairfax County Department of Transportation discussed the proposal during a virtual public meeting on Thursday, March 19.

Christiana Briganti-Dunn, a project manager with FCDOT design consultant Parsons Corporation, said Idylwood Road is an important corridor connecting neighborhoods, schools, transit stops and community destinations. She said the project is intended to improve pedestrian safety, accessibility and walking facilities.

Construction would replace existing driveway pipes and drainage ditches with curbs, gutters, inlets and underground drainage pipes. Existing curb ramps would also be upgraded to meet Americans with Disabilities Act standards.

The work will require partial reconstruction of four driveways. Some trees and fences could be removed, and underground gas, water or sewer connections serving nearby properties may need to be relocated because of grading for the walkway.

Property owners would receive compensation for right-of-way acquisitions, temporary easements and other project impacts.

The county estimates the project will cost $3.2 million, including $1.58 million for construction. Land acquisition is expected to begin this fall, followed by utility relocations in 2027. Construction is scheduled to start in fall 2027, with completion anticipated by summer 2028.

Residents can submit feedback through an online survey until April 2.
