Two of Potomac School’s top girls basketball players watched from the bench as the Panthers defeated Flint Hill 73-53 on Jan. 25.

Senior teammates Margit Crittenberger and Zora Burrell, both three-sport athletes, missed the road game with lower-leg injuries. Potomac School still opened the following week with a 12-7 overall record and the No. 5 ranking in the Division I state poll.

Burrell, a starting guard and forward, suffered her injury during a Jan. 21 contest. She averages nine points per game and ranks among the Panthers’ leaders in rebounds, steals and assists. She is expected to return in the coming days.

Crittenberger has not played this basketball season after injuring an ankle during the preseason for the fall soccer campaign. She has resumed practicing with the team, but her return to games remains uncertain.

When available, Crittenberger starts or fills a sixth-player role, supplying defense and physical play for the state-ranked Panthers.

Potomac School has won multiple games without Burrell, but a demanding stretch awaits. The Panthers are scheduled to face top Independent School League AA Division opponents Sidwell Friends, Georgetown Visitation and Maret before conference and state postseason tournaments.

Both seniors also have spring sports ahead. Crittenberger plays lacrosse and will continue at Division I Davidson College. Burrell plays softball and is headed to the University of Chicago for Division III basketball.

Before their college careers begin, both hope to get healthy and finish their final basketball season at Potomac School on the court.
