For seven years, instructional assistant Samina Butt has helped Irving Middle School students with diverse learning needs gain confidence, independence and a stronger sense of belonging.

Butt, a finalist for Outstanding School-Based Operational Employee, bases her work on a straightforward principle: focus on what each student can do. That approach allows her to recognize small signs of progress as important steps in a student’s development.

Principal Cindy Conley called Butt “an invaluable asset,” saying her calm manner and respect for each student’s individuality help create a safe, supportive environment.

One parent said Butt formed a trusting relationship with their daughter and helped her resume communicating with an augmentative and alternative communication device after earlier difficulties. The parent described that progress as “very big wins” and credited Butt’s patience, modeling and connection with the student.

Her involvement extends beyond classroom hours. Butt sponsors an after-school Henna Club and works to connect students with extracurricular activities that support their academic, social and emotional development.

Colleagues also know her as a determined problem solver who collaborates with her team, assists students with complex communication needs and organizes support for fellow staff members.

Her contributions were recognized April 7, 2026, in connection with Paraprofessional Appreciation Day, observed annually on the first Wednesday in April to honor instructional assistants, aides and paraeducators.
