Kirsten Salonga, a biology and environmental science teacher at Justice High School, has received the 2025 AFS-USA Global Educator of the Year award.

Salonga teaches multilingual learners and serves as the school’s science department chair. The award recognizes educators who weave cultural diversity, global competence and international perspectives into their teaching while encouraging students to become active global citizens.

AFS-USA is the largest partner in an international network of nonprofit, volunteer-based education organizations.

Assistant Principal Rashawn Luckman said Salonga recognizes the value of each student’s individual story and treats cultural differences as a strength. Luckman also credited her with bringing the wider world into the classroom and creating opportunities for students to grow, explore and learn.

Biology teacher Benjamin Slyngstad praised Salonga’s innovative curriculum and dedication to students who are often overlooked. He highlighted the science resources she has developed, her efforts to introduce students to scientists and her commitment to finding new experiences for them while incorporating global perspectives into daily lessons.

Former student Karen Rosicela Orozco Carreto wrote in a recommendation letter that Salonga combines her passion for teaching with a desire to improve the world. She said Salonga teaches more than science by emphasizing empathy, collaboration and global citizenship.

Salonga accepted the honor during the annual AFS-USA Educational and Cultural Affairs Program Workshop in March 2025. She also met participants from around the world and engaged with the organization’s volunteers and staff.

Salonga has earned another major distinction alongside John Mika, a mathematics teacher at Hayfield Secondary School. The two educators were named Virginia finalists for the 2025 Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching.

Considered the nation’s highest honor for K-12 science, technology, engineering and mathematics teachers, the presidential award recognizes educators with strong subject knowledge who can motivate students and help them succeed.
