Virginia State Police said a reportedly stolen vehicle fleeing troopers early July 22 reached speeds exceeding 130 mph across Fairfax and Prince William counties before allegedly ramming a state police cruiser into a jersey wall on northbound I-95.

The incident began around 1:21 a.m. when troopers received an alert about the vehicle traveling south on I-395 in Fairfax County. Several troopers located it on southbound I-95 just south of the Springfield Mixing Bowl and attempted a traffic stop, which failed.

“The pursuit continued southbound, with the suspect vehicle reaching speeds in excess of 130 miles per hour,” Virginia State Police said.

At Exit 150, the pursued vehicle struck an uninvolved vehicle, police said. A trooper then attempted a stopping maneuver on Minnieville Road in Dale City, but the vehicle continued fleeing and returned to northbound I-95.

During an attempted box-in maneuver on I-95, police alleged that the pursued vehicle rammed a trooper’s cruiser and forced it into a jersey wall. The vehicle stopped about 100 yards later.

Both the trooper and the juvenile driver were evaluated at a hospital. The trooper sustained minor injuries and was released. The driver, a juvenile from Maryland, was also hospitalized.

After leaving the hospital, the juvenile driver was taken to Fairfax County Juvenile Intake. “After being released from the hospital, he was taken to Fairfax County Juvenile Intake and he has been charged with unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, assault on a law enforcement officer, and eluding,” Virginia State Police said.

Four passengers were in the vehicle—one 18-year-old adult and three juveniles. All were released from custody following the crash.

“The incident remains under investigation,” Virginia State Police said.
