Kilmer Middle School math teacher Paige Knisley has created a judgment-free space where students can discreetly obtain personal-care items and remain focused on learning.
Her classroom’s Care Corner offers supplies that may be difficult for students to find elsewhere at school, including toothbrushes, flossers, feminine products and mints. The goal is to give students a sense of safety, security and comfort while reducing barriers that could take them out of the classroom.
Knisley’s work is featured in the first episode of “In the Spotlight,” a new video series highlighting effective practices and inspiring moments from across the school division. The series grew from stories shared during interviews for the FCPS Outstanding Employee Awards.
New episodes are scheduled for release every Tuesday beginning in February on the “In the Spotlight” playlist on the FCPS YouTube channel. Future installments will feature employees strengthening connections with students, expanding access to knowledge and removing obstacles to participating in athletics.
