Fairfax Villa Elementary School students transformed dozens of donated rocks into bright messages of encouragement for World Kindness Day on Nov. 13.

Fourth graders and other students in the school’s Peer Buddies program painted peace signs, hearts and supportive phrases such as “You Can!” and “You can do this!” The finished rocks will be displayed in the school’s courtyards and around its grounds.

Fourth grader Lucia said the students hoped their colorful creations would make people happy. Classmate Monai said her messages were intended to encourage people through whatever challenges they may be facing.

Wade, who sometimes uses a device to communicate, described the activity by writing, “paint red. Feel happy.”

The project paired lessons about kindness and inclusion with collaboration and fine motor skill development. Occupational therapist Angela Bernier called it a way to connect skill-building with students’ enthusiasm for strengthening their community.

Adapted physical education teacher Laura Dinan founded Peer Buddies to create meaningful connections between students with disabilities and their peers. The program also gives fourth graders an active role in building relationships throughout the school. Dinan said some participants have enjoyed the experience so much that they want to remain involved beyond fourth grade.

Bernier developed the kindness-rock idea after seeing similar painted stones hidden around a beach town during a family trip. She later contacted the “Fairfax Rocks” Facebook group seeking donations.

Two donors quickly supplied enough rocks for what Bernier estimated could be three years of projects. One also offered paint and markers, allowing the school to complete the activity at no cost.

Bernier said those contributions from people with no prior connection to the school demonstrated the same community spirit and spontaneous generosity celebrated by World Kindness Day.

Principal Linda Textoris said the project showed how members of a school can work together to spread kindness while developing a stronger sense of community among students.
