A restaurant with an unusual name is building a following at Reston Town Center West, pairing a playful identity with an expansive menu of pizzas, sandwiches, pasta, seafood dishes and drinks.
Kook Dogg Cafe occupies the former Little Beast Cafe and Bistro space at 12100 Sunset Hills Road. Behind the restaurant are Paul and Noel Kuchler and Walt and Karen Hodges, whose personal and professional connections helped turn Paul Kuchler’s long-standing plan for another restaurant into reality.
The name comes from Kuchler’s high school nickname, “Kook Dogg.” The restaurant also draws on his family history, recipes and years of experience in Northern Virginia kitchens.
Kuchler previously operated Maplewood Grill, where Noel became involved while continuing her full-time work as a labor and delivery nurse. The couple sold that restaurant in 2017, but Kuchler remained in the industry and continued planning a return to ownership.
Noel’s work also led to the partnership behind the new venture. She worked with OB-GYN Dr. Walt Hodges, who learned about the Kuchlers’ restaurant ambitions. After discussing the concept with Paul, Hodges and his wife, Karen, invested in the project. The group later selected the Reston Town Center West location.
A broad menu with Bavarian touches
Kuchler designed a casual American menu that resists easy categorization. Bavarian influences appear alongside specialty pizzas, approximately 30 artisanal sandwiches, appetizers, soups, salads and pasta dishes.
The pizza lineup takes inspiration from different regions, with selections named for places ranging from South Philadelphia to Maui. Customers can also build their own pizzas or sandwiches.
Among the restaurant’s more distinctive dishes are shrimp and blue crab ballitos and crab and corn chowder served with Goldfish crackers. The Maplewood Grilled Cheese carries over a name connected to Kuchler’s earlier restaurant while offering a more elaborate take on the familiar sandwich.
The beverage selection includes draft beer, wine, whiskey flights, cocktails and alcohol-free mocktails. Nonalcoholic beers from Athletic Brewing and Bero are also available.
Gluten-free pizza crust and sandwich bread are offered for customers with dietary restrictions. Children ages 10 and younger can choose from five simpler American dishes on the “Little Kooks” menu.
A polished but relaxed dining room
The owners extensively renovated the former restaurant space, creating a modern dining room intended to remain casual and family-friendly. A tribute wall recognizes the people and history behind the business.
Online diners have frequently described the restaurant as lively without being excessively loud. Reviews have also praised its range of choices, presentation, service and relaxed atmosphere.
One family visiting in May 2025 highlighted the large menu and buffalo chicken dip. A customer who held a farewell lunch there in December 2024 gave top marks to the food, service and atmosphere. Another review noted that a minor ordering mistake was corrected promptly and professionally.
The mix of seating, menu options and atmosphere allows the cafe to serve families, couples and coworkers for occasions ranging from quick lunches to group celebrations.
Trivia, brunch and happy hour
Kook Dogg Cafe holds trivia at 7 p.m. Wednesdays and serves Sunday brunch from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Happy hour runs from 4 to 6 p.m. on weekdays and from 3 to 5 p.m. on weekends. Specials include $2 discounts on draft beer, wine by the glass, individual pizzas and selected appetizers, along with $6 rail drinks.
