Lake Braddock Secondary School’s senior gymnasts ended their high school careers as champions in every season, helping the Bruins capture a fourth consecutive Virginia state title.
The victory raised the program’s record total to 13 state championships, more than any other Virginia school. Lake Braddock won its first title in 1979, when gymnastics became the first girls’ sport introduced by the Virginia High School League.
Only three head coaches have led the 51-year-old program. Current head coach Michael Cooper has guided Lake Braddock to nine of its championships while emphasizing determination and teamwork.
Senior Madison Bell also secured her second state all-around title. She said gymnastics taught her patience because mastering new skills requires repeated attempts. A highlight of her final season was earning the first perfect 10 of her career.
Bell’s classmates said the sport’s lessons extend well beyond competition. Sofia Orphanos described learning to recover after falls and credited gymnastics with building resilience, discipline and perseverance.
Maggie Suson pointed to the close relationships formed among teammates who compete against one another but still want everyone to succeed.
For Julia Arnold, winning championships in all four years of high school made the latest title particularly meaningful.
The senior class now departs after extending a Lake Braddock tradition that has endured for more than five decades, leaving another championship banner and a four-year sweep behind.
