Latin is often called a dead language, yet it remains embedded in modern life. Its influence becomes especially visible in scientific writing, where unfamiliar technical terms can become easier to understand when traced to their linguistic roots.
An immuno-oncology research paper, for example, may initially seem impenetrable. Dense paragraphs and specialized vocabulary can leave readers feeling lost. Knowledge of Latin, however, offers a way through: break each term into its component parts and examine where they came from.
“Ligand,” a term for a molecule that binds to another molecule, is connected to the Latin ligare, meaning “to bind.” “Malignant” draws on roots associated with something bad and with birth or origin. “Immunity” traces back to the idea of being exempt from a duty or public service.
These origins give scientific terms more than definitions. They reveal the ideas and images carried inside the words, helping readers navigate complicated subjects one piece at a time.
Latin may no longer be widely spoken in daily conversation, but it never entirely disappeared. It survives throughout modern languages—and in science, it is still hard at work.
