A burning lawn mower spread flames to the rear deck of a Bailey’s Crossroads home Monday, prompting a response from Fairfax County firefighters around 2:40 p.m.

Crews found the fire in the 5800 block of Glen Forest Drive. Everyone inside had evacuated before firefighters arrived, and no civilians or firefighters were injured.

Elsewhere in the region, the Kennedy Center restored its familiar name at the top of its website after previously displaying “The Trump Kennedy Center.” The online change came ahead of a June 12 deadline to remove President Donald Trump’s name.

Ticks also continue to become more common locally. Reported Lyme disease cases in Washington, D.C., increased 57% between 2012 and 2023, according to federal data.

Northern Virginia’s inconsistent bus fare and enforcement rules are confusing passengers and creating problems for transit systems, WMATA CEO Randy Clarke told the Northern Virginia Transportation Commission. Clarke said riders do not bear all the responsibility for the region’s high fare-evasion rate and urged local officials to provide more help.

At Tysons Corner Center, Fairfax County approved buildout plans in late May that could clear the way for Oscar Farinetti’s Eataly Italian food hall chain. The business is expected to occupy the prominent two-level space formerly used by American Girl.

Ten Fairfax County-based companies landed on the 2026 Fortune 500 list of the country’s largest publicly traded corporations. Tysons-based Freddie Mac ranked highest among them at No. 55.

Jordan A. Scheff has been appointed executive director of the Fairfax-Falls Church Community Services Board, effective Monday, June 15. Scheff has served as commissioner of Connecticut’s Department of Developmental Services since 2017. He succeeds Daryl Washington, who resigned to take a position in Gov. Abigail Spanberger’s administration.

A public hearing is scheduled for June 15 on a proposed Clifton meals-tax increase of at least 1% for fiscal year 2027.
