Three Northern Virginia community newspapers will shift to a twice-monthly print schedule in 2025 as declining advertising revenue threatens their ability to continue publishing.

The Mount Vernon Gazette, Alexandria Gazette Packet and their affiliated local editions expect to publish during the first and third weeks of most months. The change is intended to reduce costs while expanding digital news delivery between print editions.

Readers can expect email alerts and online updates featuring top stories, upcoming events, nonprofit activities, animal rescues, traffic disruptions, road work and other community information.

The publications are considering a more robust online presence and plan to explore nonprofit status in the coming months. They have not yet obtained that status.

For now, the newspapers are seeking contributions, sponsorships and additional advertising to close their revenue gap. Donations by check may be made payable to Local Media Connection, the Alexandria Gazette Packet or the Mount Vernon Gazette and mailed to 1606 King Street, Alexandria, Virginia 22314.
