A planned traffic shift on the eastbound Dulles Toll Road in Tysons has been postponed until after the Fourth of July holiday weekend, the Virginia Department of Transportation announced Thursday, June 25.
The agency said it will provide another update once the schedule is confirmed.
The temporary lane split was expected to begin around 10 p.m. Thursday, weather permitting. Under the plan, eastbound traffic in the left lane will cross onto the Dulles Airport Access Road near the Route 123 bridge, while drivers in the right lane will remain on the toll road.
The split is expected to stay in place for about 18 months, giving crews room to rehabilitate the eastbound bridge while limiting traffic disruptions. All eastbound Dulles Toll Road ramps connecting with Route 123, also known as Dolley Madison Boulevard, will remain open.
Work on the bridge began in December. The project includes replacing its concrete deck, parapets and steel beams, repairing its piers and abutments, and installing a new overhead sign for eastbound drivers.
VDOT said the approximately $11.85 million rehabilitation will extend the bridge’s lifespan, improve safety and increase clearance for Route 123 traffic passing beneath it.
Construction remains scheduled for completion in early 2028. Drivers, bicyclists and pedestrians are urged to watch for changing traffic patterns, avoid distractions and use caution in the work zone.
