Construction has begun on Rivana, a long-planned mixed-use development at the Innovation Center Metro station. Developers and Loudoun County officials marked the groundbreaking Monday.
Plans call for 3.5 million square feet of office space, 3,700 homes and 500 hotel rooms across 103 acres along the Loudoun-Fairfax border.
Virginia is also poised to establish paid family leave and paid sick leave programs after lawmakers approved bills creating the two benefits. Modeled on the commonwealth’s unemployment program, they would provide paid time off during qualifying emergencies and require funding to operate.
In Fairfax Station, police are investigating an April 6 burglary at the Exxon station at 8965 Village Shops Drive. An employee arriving around 6:03 a.m. found the front door smashed. Security footage showed a man using a rock to break the door at approximately 12:40 a.m. before taking cigarettes and alcohol.
Freedom Financial Holdings has relocated its corporate offices to 1750 Tysons Boulevard in McLean, where the Freedom Bank of Virginia has opened a new branch. The move comes during the financial institution’s 25th anniversary and continued expansion in Northern Virginia.
Fairfax City residents identified schools, infrastructure and public safety as leading budget priorities during an April 16 meeting on the proposed fiscal 2027 budget. Participants expressed little interest in cutting existing city services.
Fairfax County has handled 481 emergency substantial-risk cases and temporarily seized 947 firearms since Virginia’s red flag law took effect July 1, 2020. Commonwealth’s Attorney Steve Descano believes a recent increase in cases may reflect growing public awareness of the law.
In Annandale, 31 volunteers marked Earth Day with an April 18 cleanup in the Hillbrook-Tall Oaks neighborhood. The group gathered 24 bags of trash and recyclable materials from local streets and the grounds of Poe Middle School.
