The McLean Highlanders closed their preseason with a commanding 15-3 scrimmage victory over West Springfield on March 11, building momentum ahead of their official lacrosse opener.

A thunderstorm delayed the start, but it did little to slow McLean once play began. The Highlanders took control through a potent offense, quick midfield transitions and sustained pressure on the Spartans’ defense.

Head coach Michelle Maxwell-Gold credited the team’s transition play with creating scoring opportunities. She also highlighted McLean’s willingness to share the ball, with many goals coming off assists instead of individual drives.

The Highlanders entered the scrimmage hoping to build upon a strong previous season. Sophomore midfielder Jordyn Nowinski said several talented freshmen have already become important contributors to a team that has continued to grow.

Although players are still learning how to make the best use of one another’s strengths, McLean’s established chemistry was evident. The Highlanders spread out across the field, connected on quick passes and worked together despite having players at different skill levels.

McLean also fought aggressively for possession and intercepted numerous passes. Even as the physical strain of the game became apparent, the Highlanders continued executing plays together.

Senior goalkeeper Brooke Buursink anchored a strong defensive effort with numerous saves. Combined with coordinated midfield play, McLean’s defense largely neutralized West Springfield’s attack.

Buursink said the Highlanders’ spacing helped them move the ball rapidly from one side of the field to the other. She also became more vocal in goal, helping the defense stay focused and operate as a unit.

Despite the lopsided result, Maxwell-Gold said the team still has work to do before facing Oakton on March 17. McLean wants to develop a more varied team offense instead of repeatedly relying on drives toward the goal.

The coach said the Highlanders are already passing faster and completing more catches than they did last season, improvements she believes are raising the team’s overall level of play.
