Dr. Michael Timothy Gocke has spent more than 15 years treating oral and maxillofacial surgery patients in Northern Virginia, with work spanning dental implants, wisdom teeth removal, corrective jaw surgery and facial reconstruction.
A native of Morgantown, West Virginia, Gocke initially studied accounting, earning a B.S.B.A. from West Virginia University’s School of Business and Economics. He later received his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from the university’s School of Dentistry, graduating near the top of his class.
He completed specialty training in oral and maxillofacial surgery at Parkland Memorial Hospital, part of the University of Texas Southwestern program in Dallas. As chief resident, he conducted research involving sleep apnea and the reconstruction of facial defects caused by skin cancer.
Gocke is certified by the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. He has served as president of the Virginia Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons and belongs to several dental and surgical professional organizations.
His clinical work includes dental implants and All-on-4 restorations, bone grafting, oral pathology, TMJ disorder treatment, facial trauma care and orthognathic surgery. He also provides cosmetic facial treatments and is certified to administer intravenous sedation in his office. Over his career, he has performed more than 5,000 procedures involving anesthesia.
A significant part of his practice centers on reducing reliance on opioid pain medication. Gocke educates patients about non-opioid options following surgery, including the long-lasting pain-control product EXPAREL. That effort has focused particularly on younger patients recovering from wisdom tooth extraction.
Gocke previously chaired oral and maxillofacial surgery at Inova Fairfax Hospital and remains a member of the department. He also serves on the medical staffs of Virginia Hospital Center and Inova hospitals in Fairfax, Loudoun and Fair Oaks.
His professional recognition includes awards from the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, the International Congress of Oral Implantologists and the American Academy of Orofacial Pain. He has also received recognition for patient-safety practices intended to prevent infections, medical errors and other avoidable complications.
Beyond his practice, Gocke serves on the McLean Youth Association board and provides dental-trauma care to athletic programs at Langley and McLean high schools.
Through World Mission Partners, he and members of his staff have provided free oral and maxillofacial surgery to underserved patients in the Dominican Republic and Costa Rica. His practice also supports organizations including the McLean Project for the Arts, the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, the Prevent Cancer Foundation and St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
Gocke lives with his wife and four children. Outside work, his interests include golf, basketball and skiing.
