Historic preservation work along the Memorial Avenue Corridor will begin March 19, 2026, bringing temporary lane closures and pedestrian detours through mid- to late May.
The National Park Service project will restore prominent memorial features as the United States approaches its 250th anniversary. The work also advances President Donald J. Trump’s executive order, “Making the District of Columbia Safe and Beautiful.”
Crews will clean Boundary Channel Bridge, repair deteriorating mortar and restore granite elements on the bridge and at Memorial Circle. Work will also cover the Seabees Memorial, the United Spanish War Veterans Memorial and the structural bases supporting the corridor’s iconic eagle statues.
Drivers should expect lane closures beneath the bridge on Washington Boulevard and the southbound George Washington Memorial Parkway. Closures will occur during off-peak hours from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., with half of the travel lanes closed at a time.
Traffic controls and signs will direct motorists through the work zone. Hot water used to clean the bridge may drip or spray onto passing vehicles, but no chemicals will be used and the water will not damage vehicle paint.
Pedestrians crossing Boundary Channel Bridge will be temporarily rerouted to crosswalks along Memorial Avenue between the Arlington National Cemetery Metro Station and Memorial Circle.
Drivers and pedestrians should use caution and follow posted signs and directions from traffic personnel.
