Mental health, substance use and affordable housing emerged as major concerns among more than 2,000 people who participated in Alexandria’s 2024 community health survey.

Conducted in fall 2024, the survey asked residents to identify the city’s most pressing health issues, its greatest strengths and the changes that could improve community health. Respondents participated online and on paper, with demographics including ZIP code, race and ethnicity, preferred language, household income and age broadly reflecting Alexandria’s population.

Residents ranked mental health as a leading health issue, alongside alcohol, drug and opiate use and concerns related to obesity, physical activity and nutrition.

Alexandria’s diversity was identified as one of its strongest assets. Respondents also highlighted opportunities for community involvement and belonging, as well as educational opportunities.

When asked what would most improve health in the city, residents prioritized safe, healthy and affordable housing; access to mental health and substance-use services; and greater support for children, young people and families.

Priorities differed among population groups. Older adults and residents with higher education levels were more likely to identify chronic health conditions as a major concern, while lower-income respondents ranked dental health as a top issue.

The Alexandria Health Department planned to combine the findings with a broader data analysis for the city’s Community Health Assessment, a comprehensive examination of health in Alexandria. The assessment was scheduled for release by the end of June 2025 and was intended to help residents develop the next five-year Community Health Improvement Plan.

Residents could also contribute health-related photographs to a community photo album. Additional engagement opportunities included a Community Walk and Talk in the Landmark/Van Dorn area at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 26.

Health department staff were also scheduled to attend the Office of Housing’s Housing Master Plan Update meeting from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, March 18, at the Patrick Henry K-8 School Cafetorium, 4643 Taney Ave.
