Three people were hospitalized Wednesday afternoon after a building under construction collapsed in Merrifield.
Fairfax County and Fairfax City firefighters were called to the 3000 block of Cedar Lane, north of Route 50, around 1:18 p.m., according to Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department spokesperson Ashley Hildebrandt.
Responders described the collapse as a cave-in. Scanner traffic indicated that two people were initially found beneath the building, including one who was unconscious. By 1:23 p.m., neither person remained trapped under the structure.
A construction worker stranded on the roof also had to be rescued.
Fire crews and the department’s Technical Rescue Operations Team assessed the site and assisted workers following the collapse.
Hildebrandt said all three patients appeared to have non-life-threatening injuries. They were taken to a nearby hospital for further evaluation.
