Uno Pizzeria & Grill has permanently closed its longtime restaurant at Gatehouse Plaza in Merrifield after 25 years in business.
The restaurant at 3058 Gate House Plaza served customers for the final time on Jan. 28. In a Facebook announcement, the chain thanked patrons for supporting the location over the years.
A notice posted on the restaurant’s door also described serving the community for 25 years as an honor and a pleasure.
Uno did not announce a reason for the closure. A manager at the chain’s Kingstowne restaurant, who was not speaking officially for the company or the Merrifield location, said he had heard that leasing issues and insufficient business contributed to the decision.
The closing leaves the Kingstowne Town Center restaurant as Uno’s only location in Fairfax County and all of Northern Virginia. It is about a 20-minute drive from the former Merrifield site.
Known for deep-dish pizza, Uno offered seven varieties along with customizable pies. Its menu also featured thin-crust pizza, burgers, salads and pasta.
The Chicago-based chain closed another longstanding corporate restaurant at Union Station in Washington, D.C., during the same month.
The Greater Merrifield Business Association said Uno had supported both the organization and the surrounding community. The group remembered the restaurant as affordable, consistent and family-friendly, with a strong staff.
Gatehouse Plaza still has several dining choices, including neighboring Sweetwater Tavern and Guapo’s, as well as Wendy’s and Starbucks.
