Metro is rebuilding WMATA.com around mobile users, bringing trip planning, service alerts, arrival times, routes, and station information together in one place. The redesigned website replaces a version last updated in 2016 and serves an audience generating about 1.5 million views each month.

A new AI-enabled chat service will provide customer support around the clock. Drawing from Metro transit data and information published on the website, it will answer common questions about trip planning, arrivals, and other topics.

Live representatives will remain available from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. on weekdays and from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on weekends.

The mobile-first website was also designed to work more effectively with screen readers and assistive tools such as iOS VoiceOver and Android TalkBack. Larger text and stronger color contrast are intended to make the site easier to navigate. Metro says the redesign aligns with WCAG 2.2 accessibility standards.

Visitors will be able to use the site in more than a dozen languages, including Spanish, Chinese, Vietnamese, Amharic, Russian, Somalian, Arabic, Portuguese, Filipino, Korean, French, and Dari. More languages and translation improvements are planned following the launch.

The website will feature Metro’s “One Metro” branding across its digital services. A fully integrated Smart Trip experience is expected in the next phase of the overhaul later this year.

Customers can submit feedback through a banner at the top of the WMATA.com homepage after the redesigned site launches. Metro cautioned that some features could be temporarily unavailable at launch.

An upgraded version of the Metro Pulse app is scheduled to launch May 31.
