Metro will mark 50 years of service by displaying its oldest and newest generations of trains together on the National Mall during the Great American State Fair.
The “America’s Metro System” exhibition will feature Metro’s first 1000-series railcar, restored to its 1976 appearance, alongside a new 8000-series car. The first 8000-series test cars are expected to arrive in late 2027.
Running from June 25 through July 10, 2026, the 15-day exhibition will coincide with the nation’s 250th anniversary celebration. Exhibitors representing all 50 states will also participate in the fair.
Historic photographs, artifacts and a dedicated gallery inside the train cars will trace Metro’s development across the National Capital Region. Displays will cover system expansions, engineering milestones, improvements to the customer experience and investments intended to support regional growth.
Interactive exhibits, educational activities and multimedia presentations will also explore the future of transportation and mobility, connecting Metro’s history with broader themes of American infrastructure, accessibility and innovation.
“For 50 years, Metro has connected people across the region to jobs, schools, healthcare, culture, and opportunity,” Metro General Manager and CEO Randy Clarke said. He described the exhibition as a celebration of the people, partnerships and progress behind the system’s first five decades.
Metro Board Chair Valerie Santos said the anniversary recognizes the employees, riders and regional partners who have kept the region moving.
The Great American State Fair will combine exhibitions with educational programs, entertainment and interactive experiences centered on American history, culture, innovation and community.
“America’s Metro System” will be located near Fourth Street and Madison Drive NW. The nearest security entrances will be at Seventh Street and Madison Drive NW and Seventh Street and Jefferson Drive NW. Archives and L’Enfant Plaza, using Exit A, are the closest Metro stations.
The exhibition will be open from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sundays through Wednesdays and from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. Thursdays through Saturdays. Hours will extend to midnight on July 4.
Metro also plans special-edition America-themed vehicle wraps and Smart Trip cards as part of the anniversary celebration. Additional event details will be posted closer to the exhibition dates.
