Metrobus riders encountered new route names and service adjustments beginning June 29 as Metro launched its 2025 Better Bus Network.
The redesigned network is intended to provide more frequent and consistent service, improve connections across the region and make bus routes easier to understand.
In Mount Vernon, Metro is coordinating with the Fairfax Connector system. The effort includes the F19, 101 and 102 routes near the George Washington Memorial Parkway, along with the 171, 308, 151 and 159 routes serving the Richmond Highway corridor. Fairfax Connector route names did not change.
The former REX route is now the F1X, while the 11Y has been renamed the F19.
The F1X connects King Street in Old Town Alexandria with Fort Belvoir. The F19 travels from Washington’s K Street business corridor through Old Town, then follows the parkway to Jeff Todd Way and Richmond Highway.
F19 service operates during weekday rush hours, from 6 to 8 a.m. and from 4 to 6:30 p.m. The F1X runs every 20 to 30 minutes outside those periods.
The changes also eliminated several bus stops. According to Metro’s list, most affected Alexandria stops were closer to the city around Seminary Road and Beauregard Street.
Planning for the Better Bus Network began in 2022. The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors approved the plan in 2024. Al Himes, Metro’s director of bus service planning and scheduling, serves as the project manager.
